SUMMARY:Tides of Freedom: Spain & The Battle For American Independence
DESCRIPTION:Tides of Freedom explores how Spanish influence\, leadership\, and resources helped shape the course of the Revolutionary War\, an especially meaningful story for Texas\, which was part of Spain’s American territories during this pivotal era. Through captivating storytelling and historical highlights\, the exhibit sheds light on the strategic importance of the Gulf Coast\, the Mississippi River\, and the Spanish frontier. \nCentral to the exhibit is the remarkable leadership of Bernardo de Gálvez\, whose efforts both before and after King Carlos III of Spain declared war on Britain proved instrumental in weakening British control. Visitors will also discover how Texas cattle were driven across vast distances to help feed Spanish troops\, demonstrating the region’s critical logistical role. Stories of Spanish military engagements along the Mississippi River and the Gulf further illustrate the breadth of Spain’s involvement and sacrifice.

SUMMARY:Printing the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence\, explore how print culture was crucial to the American Revolution. Prints\, books\, and newspapers shaped colonists’ reactions to British rule\, informed Americans of major developments during the war\, and commemorated beloved leaders after the United States gained its independence. Read about these important works thanks to students’ research in Dr. Mary Draper’s Revolutionary America class from the History Department at MSU Texas. \nFebruary 21-August 22 | Tuesday through Friday 10am-5pm | Saturdays 1-5pm (except university holidays) \nExhibitions and programs are made possible in part by grants from the City of Wichita Falls as administered by the Wichita Falls Alliance for Arts and Culture\, the Wichita Falls Area Community Foundation\, and the Texas Commission on the Arts; the J.S. Bridwell Foundation; the Bryant Edwards Foundation; the Fain Foundation; the Lola Pitzer Endowment; and MSU Texas with support from the Museum Trust Fund and individual donors to Texoma Gives and the Museum Annual Fund.

SUMMARY:"Revolutions and Constitutions: Nation-Building in the Americas after 1776" Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:What happens when undergraduate historians dive into the archives? You get “Revolutions and Constitutions: Nation-Building in the Americas after 1776.” This exhibition commemorates the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence by placing it within a broader hemispheric narrative. It explores how revolutionary ideals and new models of governance\, shaped by Enlightenment thought and the U.S. Revolution\, sparked independence movements and constitutional experimentation across Latin America. But it is also the result of a unique collaboration between UT history students (guided by Professors Lina del Castillo and Cristina Soriano) and Benson Curator Veronica Valarino. Together\, they’ve unearthed rare documents that challenge simple narratives about independence.\nCome see how student research has brought to light the complex legacies of liberty\, citizenship\, and persistent inequality that continue to shape our hemisphere today. \nFeaturing: Rare maps\, manuscripts\, and a companion digital exhibit by Benson Digital Scholarship Coordinator Albert Palacios. Digital Exhibit link: “Polarizing Uncertainty in the Atlantic World around 1776” \nVisit us: Now through December 14\, 2026 at the Benson Latin American Collection\, Ann Hartness Reading Room\, First Floor\, Sid Richardson Hall\, Unit 1\, University of Texas at Austin. \n

SUMMARY:Display: Documenting America in Government Records. Keeping America Informed - From Printing Press to Digital AI Era (1700s to Present)
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit reveals the behind-the-scenes—often lesser-known but highly significant—history of federal printing\, preservation\, and public access to information in the United States since the 1700s—inviting visitors to deepen their understanding and broaden awareness of how government information reaches the public. How has free\, equal\, and permanent public access been ensured—and how is it evolving today? What roles have libraries played? What do you want libraries to provide—now and in the future—to support open and reliable access to information? From the long-standing partnership between federal institutions and libraries to the evolving digital FDLP and emerging NCSA model\, the exhibit also showcases the latest official government information discovery tools and highlights opportunities to learn more about and use government information services at Fondren Library and across the Federal Depository Library network. It reflects on Fondren Library’s journey as a Federal Depository Library since 1967\, encouraging visitors to consider how they can help preserve and advance free\, equal\, and permanent public access to information in a digital\, AI-driven era.

SUMMARY:Music in the Chamber with Austin Baroque Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate America’s 250th anniversary\, each concert in the 2026 series features music from a 50-year period in American history\, spanning from 1776 to 2026! \nSoloists from the renowned Austin Baroque Orchestra present “Close Encounters of the Colonial Kind\,” evoking the sonic world of colonial North America in a commemoration of the first 50 years after American independence. \nFeaturing replicas of instruments from the 18th century and music from the four colonial powers — England\, Spain\, France\, and the Netherlands — listeners will enjoy popular songs by late composers Ignacio Jerusalem\, Jean-Baptiste Lully\, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck\, Alexander Reinagle\, and more. \nWhether sounds from the cathedrals of New Spain\, or the Ursuline Convent in New Orleans\, or melodies originating in the small settlement of New Amsterdam\, or the Revolutionary-War-era streets of Boston\, this program invites the audience to consider how musical traditions crossed oceans\, transformed cultures\, and took root in American soil amid the complexities of colonial life.
